The City of Victorias kicked off its Recognition and Capacity Building session for the newly established School’s Deputy Information Officers (SDIO), empowering public and private high school students to promote volunteerism and effective information dissemination, held at the City Aquatic Center, Pavilion II, on July 22.

The initiative aims to equip junior and senior high school students with essential skills in public information, communication, and civic engagement, while promoting volunteerism and youth empowerment within their respective school communities.

Led by the Victorias City Information Office (VCIO), the program introduced participants to basic local government processes and the fundamentals of news writing and public information.

Among the speakers were City Information Officer Joy Famini, who discussed the role of local government in public information, and VCIO Head Writer John Francis Memis, who tackled the basics of news writing and public information.

A total of 15 students, carefully selected by their respective school heads, were formally recognized as School Deputy Information Officers and awarded certificates of designation, signifying their new role in supporting information dissemination in their schools.

Participating schools include Abelardo D. L. Bantug, Sr. National High School, Victorias National High School, Gawahon Integrated School, Colegio De Sta. de Victorias - Integrated School, Barangay Estado National High School, Don Bosco Technical Institute of Victorias, Inc., Negros Occidental National Science High School, and Laura Vicuña Women Development and Training Center.

In addition to the capacity-building sessions, the participants also elected their set of SDIO officers, who will serve as the core leaders representing the student information officers of Victorias City in future initiatives and collaborative efforts.

"I am very glad to work with these brilliant lights and to be part of our city’s very own Sidlak," shared Neio Tingson of Negros Occidental National Science High School, expressing his excitement and commitment to his new role.

This pioneering program marks a provincial milestone, as Victorias becomes the first city in Negros to establish a structured network of student information officers trained to uphold accurate and timely communication in schools.

The next SDIO workshop is set for August 1, where participants will continue to build their skills and deepen their understanding of public information work. *
